Hiking Day...

Well... planned to ride our bikes today but with sustained winds at 22 mph and gusts to 35 mph, we opted for a hiking day. Our first hike was the Outside Loop trail at the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute. There are a variety of trails to hike at the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute and the Outer Loop covers the best scenery in the area. Located just four miles southeast of Fort Davis, Texas, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute is a private non-profit organization with just over 500 acres dedicated to the study and preservation of the Chihuahuan Desert. (Heather is making her way down Modesta Canyon in the photo above)

The trails at the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute are very well marked and offer a good variety of terrain to traverse.

Heather making her way along the Outer Loop trail - plenty of igneous rocks to make your way around. The Outer Loop trail is about 2.25 miles and allows plenty of scenic vistas looking every direction in the Davis Mountains.

Looking south towards Alpine - Mitre Peak is at the upper right.

Looking north towards the town of Fort Davis - plenty of grasslands within the vast West Texas landscape. Our next hike was to the infamous Hancock Hill back in Alpine!

Hancock Hill is located just behind Sul Ross University and is a short steep hike that overlooks all of Alpine. The main attraction is a desk that some students moved to the top of the hill! (Heather on the Hancock Hill trail)

On the west edge of Hancock Hill you eventually discover the infamous desk! Hard to believe that they drug this desk all the way up here. You will find a small supply of markers in the top center drawer so you can properly document your journey and sign the desk.

Red marker on the side of the desk helps our brand stand out a little more - 2rpace.

A rare species of tree - the Bike Tree is also found on Hancock Hill :)

Looking out over Sul Ross University and Alpine - a great view as you hike back down to finish the trail.
