Cloudcroft - Rio Penasco Bike Ride
A warmer day in southern New Mexico so we headed up to Cloudcroft to find cooler temperatures for riding. Cloudcroft sits at around 9,000 feet and offers several possible routes for scenic bike rides. No snowplows today!
Our route started out with a 19 mile downhill run along US 82 down towards Mayhill. A simple right turn on to NM Highway 130 will take you right back up to Cloudcroft for a 40 mile loop - but at mile 27 we took a left on Upper Rio Penasco Road for a 12.5 mile section of gravel. Our final turn was a right back on to the pavement of the Sunspot Highway back to Cloudcroft - making it a nice 50 mile route.
Fun entrance to a ranch along NM Highway 130.
Concrete dome house along the Upper Rio Penasco Road. I think I've seen similar homes along I-35 south of Dallas.
Heather taking a break as we worked our way up the gravel. The road surface looks pretty good but we found that is was very rough and uneven. Both of us were happy that we run big tires!
Momma horse and her foal.
Bluff Springs Recreation Area - a nice little waterfall. There is a hiking trail that takes you to the top of the falls.
Parting shot - Always have a goal when you ride - mine was this tasty Mango-Orange Sour beer from Cloudcroft Brewing Company. Salad and pizza from the brewery were also part of our post-ride rewards package :)
