OK - so maybe not really cold, but in the 50's today in the Rio Grande Valley with a bit of rain. We decided to venture out to a new brewery in Mission and one brewery that we have been to before in Pharr. Our first stop was the new (to us) 5x5 Brewing Company in Mission - a brewery that is owned and operated by U.S. Veterans.
5x5 Brewing Company opened in July of this year and seems to have developed a loyal following. Currently running eight (8) different beers on tap - we decided to start with a flight of six beers to sample their wares.
Our sample flight included (left to right): 40mm Stout, X-Porter, FUBAR-R (Irish Red), Hellcat Red Rye Ale, Brunette Bombshell Honey Brown, and Tuefel Hunden (Devil Dog) Altbier.
George (Owner/Manager) let us try the new Brunette Bombshell that was bourbon barrel aged - yummy and my favorite! We really enjoyed hanging out here for part of our afternoon and plan to return the next time we are in the Valley - good beer and good times.
Just a short drive to the north from 5x5 Brewing Company is Big River Brewery in Pharr. We really enjoyed our visit to Big River last year and decided a repeat trip was in the cards today.
Last year we had two seasonal favorites at Big River Brewery - the Mi Abuelita (Milk Stout with chocloate on the rim and toasted marshmellow) and the Pink Elephant (a Cranberry Saison) - this year we had them again!
We also decided to have dinner here - Smoke Crafters (local food truck) was on-site serving up really good brisket sandwiches, homemade kettle chips, and bacon mac & cheese. It was a nice compliment to some really good beer.
Maybe next time I'll try one of their IPA's...
If you ever get down to the Rio Grande Valley - we highly recommend visiting both of these breweries, cheers!
We are retired, live/travel full-time in a travel trailer, and enjoy the outdoors.
