"Ze plane - ze plane!" - no Tatoo or Mr. Roarke here - just a nice little area of desert for mountain biking called Fantasy Island. Located in southeast Tucson this mountain bike park contains close to 26 miles of trails. The local bike shop just converted my 27.5" x 3" tires to tubeless so I was ready to roll down the desert trail.
Fantasy Island are the closest mountain biking trails to where we are staying in Tucson. Two trail heads for access, one on the north end and one on the south end. I started at the south trail head and ventured out as the temperature was a cool 46 degrees just before 11 a.m.
Within the first mile of riding, I met a local, Tom, who gave me a guided tour around the majority of the trails. It is really nice to have a guide who can tell you what's coming up and a little about the area.
The interesting sections of the trails at Fantasy Island are located on the north end with more terrain, washes, rocks, and some technical areas (no super technical stuff). The scenery for me was very nice - I really enjoy all the mountains in the distance, especially looking toward Mt. Lemmon.
Running tubeless 27" plus tires at about 10 lbs. psi was wonderful! Lots of cushion for the big rocks and plenty of float for any deep sand.
There are many other off-road opportunities to try in the Tucson area. Tucson Mountain Park, Arizona Trail East, and Sweetwater are all on my list to ride in the near future. The local mountain bike club, Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists, have a great website with lots of trail information and maps. My impromptu trail guide, Tom, also suggested the use of an app called Trailforks - giving it a try too.
I'll definitely be getting in more rides at Fantasy Island - so close to our home on wheels and plenty of variety to keep the riding interesting.
We are retired, live/travel full-time in a travel trailer, and enjoy the outdoors.
